Kitchen Towels - Thread Sketching or Embroidery
By Linda Visnaw
Husqvarna Viking Educator

Custom color anywhere is easy, fast, and fun. It only takes minutes to add vibrant color with Tsukineko VersaCraft Pads and Fabrico Dual Head Markers. Thread Sketching tops off the design with beautiful threads for a final and eye catching touch. Or outline embroidery provides you with the art to color in just like a coloring book. With either method the result is a totally original piece of art.

Materials:

  • Fabrico® Dual Tip Markers
  • VersaCraft® Stamp Pads
  • Sponge Daubers
  • Free motion foot
  • For Embroidery: embroidery foot
  • Embroidery Needle, 90/14 needle
  • Adhesive backed water soluble stabilizer
  • 100% woven Cotton towels
  • Sulky® 30 wt. Cotton Blendables™
    thread, top and bobbin

The embroidery for this project was done using 3D Sketch and 3D Studio from Husqvarna Viking.

Instructions:

PREPARING FOR “THREAD SKETCHING”
  1. Place fabric over design.
  2. Using the bullet end of a Fabrico® Dual Tip Marker, trace the design onto the fabric.

Let’s Color:

  1. Use Fabrico® Markers to color the flower.
  2. Add a background using Sponge Daubers, VersaCraft® Ink Pads, and a flower stamp.
  3. Heat set with a dry iron, using the “cotton” temperature setting.

Thread Sketching:

  1. Adhere the fabric to stabilizer.
  2. Snap on the free motion foot.
  3. Set machine for free motion stitching.
  4. Beginning at the base of the flower, bring the bobbin thread tail up to
    the top of the fabric.
  5. Sew in place for a few stitches. Clip the thread tails.
  6. Loosely trace the base of the flower and then the buds going
over each area at least 3 times.
  7. Do not try to follow the lines exactly. This is what makes it “Sketching.”
  8. Complete the rest of the design in the same manner.
  9. Remove the Stabilizer as directed by manufacturer.

Note: Thread Sketching is a perfect warm-up and great practice for becoming more
comfortable and eventually proficient with free motion techniques. One needs to become comfortable with controlling the movement of the fabric before they can easily and confidently free motion stipple. Take your time, and enjoy your new found proficiency and the great “Art” you can create.
