Instructions:

The basic technique other than regular stamping is a technique called Direct To Paper, DTP. This means using the inkpad directly on the paper to leave color. Rub the inkpad lightly in a circular motion for a light coverage, or press with more pressure for deeper coverage. Also, swiping the pad across the surface will leave a random patch of color in various areas. Please note that this technique uses the ink from the pad in a different manner than tapping a stamp into the ink. If this class is taught or this design is demo’d, please be sure to have students get a re-inker or show the re-inker. This is especially helpful if the inkpad gets a little bit muddy, you can swipe the pad clean and reink. It is always wise to have the consumer buy the reinker at the time they buy the inkpad.

Constructing the Cover:
1. Place the 5 Ό “ Super Tape pieces on one side of each of the 5 Ό” bookboard. To do this, remove the white backing from the Super Tape bending each edge up and adhering the center of the Super Tape to the center of the bookboard. Press in the center and smooth out to each end. Remove the red liner on the Super Tape to expose the adhesive. Place the 6 ½ “ Navy Blue Linen paper in front of you and turn the bookboard so the adhesive is facedown. Center the book board to the paper and then place the bookboard down onto the Navy Blue Linen paper. Press and smooth out from the center out.
2. Mitering edges of Navy Linen paper and adhering flaps by cutting the corners of each piece of the Navy Linen with the bookboard approximately a little more than 1/8” away from the bookboard corner. Do Not Cut Too Close. Adhere ½ “ Super Tape to the inside edges pressing firmly in place by burnishing with your fingers. Remove the red liner and tightly pull the edges forward to bookboard and press starting with the center and then smoothing and pressing to each edge. A bone folder is helpful with this. Most choose to start with the long edges and then do the top shorter edges. With the long edges if you find you have a tiny bit of extra length, use a bone folder or your fingers to tuck the corners in. See illustration for visual explanation.

Constructing the Spine:
1. Create an accordion fold spine by taking the 5 Ό “ x 11 Dusty Blue paper and fold it in half lengthwise. Use a bone folder or ruler to make the fold crisp. You will have 2 halves from the center fold line. Fold each of these halves from each end to meet the first center fold. Use the bone folder or ruler to make the fold crisp. Fold each of the outer edge pieces back to the fold and use the bone folder/ruler to make the fold crisp. Open the center fold, keeping the end folds folded, and fold each end in to meet that center fold and make crisp with bone folder/ruler. You will have a completely folded accordion. Open and make sure each fold goes in the right direction as a fan fold with mountain fold, and valley fold. See illustration for visual explanation.

Decorating the Cover:
1. Doing DTP (see above explanation), swipe Orchid Ice, then Glacier Blue, and finally a small bit of Golden Mist Opalite ink on the front cover and edges.
2. With Golden Mist Opalite ink stamp the words “Follow Your Dreams” along the right edge of the cover. Also stamp the Stardust Points stamp on the upper right edge of the cover and the lower left edge of the cover.
3. On scrap of Ivory paper, do DTP using first Pretty Petunia VersaMagic ink. This should be done in a circular motion getting good coverage. Always start with the lightest color first so you do not muddy the inkpads! Next do DTP with the Spring Pansy VersaMagic ink and a little Turquoise Gem. Stamp the Butterfly Fairy stamp using the Onyx Black VersaFine ink.
4. Use one Fantastix for each color and highlight areas of the Butterfly Fairy image. Use Turquoise Gem and Tea Leaves VersaMagic inks.
5. Rip around the edge of the image, ripping away from you; and then use the Turqoise Gem VersaMagic to apply color to the edges. Adhere image to cover with the Tape Runner. Press in place and take a sticker from the silver wire stickers and place in the lower left edge of image.

Decorating and Adhering Tags to form the flag flaps:
1. Basic ideas to creating the tags –
A. DTP with one color of VersaMagic and overstamped with VersaFine.
B. DTP with 2 colors of VersaMagic (Remember light color first, then darker color) blending together and overstamped with VersaFine.
C. DTP with one or two colors of VersaMagic blending as stated in #2, then DTP swipe one or two colors of Opalite, then overstamped with VersaFine.
D. The same as #3 except stamp images that ghost with Opalite instead of DTP swiping of color, then overstamped with VersaFine.
E. After doing DTP or any other combination, and overstamping with VersaFine, accent with Versamagic and/or Opalite using the Fantastix.
F. After DTP on tag and stamping words, spray a fine mist of Walnut Ink.
G. After DTP on tag, spray a fine mist of Walnut Ink. Do DTP on a slide mount and swipe Opalite over the top. Stamp a word (s) on a slide mount. Cut and adhere picture using tape runner and adhere slide mount to tag. Stamp extra words on the side of the slide mount on the tag.
H. After DTP on tag, spray Walnut Ink but spray at a closer distance so you get larger dots of ink along with the mist. After drying a bit, stamp word and image and use Fantastix to highlight image. Do DTP on a slide mount and then spray with Walnut Ink. Use a crumpled piece of paper to blot excess ink off so the ink doesn’t dribble down the slide mount. As in G, adhere picture and adhere slide mount to tag. Stamp image and highlight using Fantastix and VersaMagic.
2. Adhering Tags to Spine: First, punch holes for the fiber to go through on the spine accordion flaps. (The top tags will be adhered on the front side of the spine fold and the bottom tags will be adhered on the back of the spine fold.) Place each tag where they will be adhered and put a small pencil dot in the valley fold. After marking all the areas, punch a small hole in each spot of the spine.
A. Next, adhere the spine to the book covers. Use the tape runner to apply adhesive and press the front spine flap to the inside of the book cover first, and then do the same with the back spine flap and adhere the spine to the back inside cover. Be careful to make sure which end you adhere to the inside of the front cover so you don’t stick the cover on upside down or on the wrong end.
B. Starting with the first tag to be adhered cut a 12-inch piece of fiber and run through the hole in the tag – do not tie it in a knot. Run both ends of the fiber through the corresponding hole in the spine. Pull the fibers tight.
C. Since we are starting with the top tag first, flip the tag over and apply adhesive to the back of the tag and press into place. All of the top tags will have adhesive on the back of the tags and all the bottom tags will have adhesive on the front of the tag. Do all of the top tags first if you feel more comfortable with this way so you don’t forget what tags need adhesive on the back of the tags and which need adhesive on the front. Repeat this process until all tags are in place.
D. Once all tags are in place, pull the fibers taught again. Close the book and let sit a moment to let the adhesive set. Your book is now finished – enjoy!
